IMPORTANT SCHEDULE CHANGE: We will return to the two gathering schedule on Sunday, September 7. Gatherings times will be the normal 5PM and 7PM.
Upcoming Solomon's Porch Events and Opportunities
Opportunity to benefit those affected by Hurricane Gustav- In expectation of the need likely to follow Hurricane Gustav, I would like to propose we begin to collect donations, both financial and material, as well as discuss sending some Porchers to New Orleans and other damaged areas in the upcoming recovery months. I would love to be the point person if others at the Porch are interested in coming together to do this. The plan would be laid out as the region tells America what they need from us. Please email ever.heather@gmail.com if you are interested.
Women's Book Study-7:30 PM Thursday, September 11th (and then weekly)- Join us to discuss "The Trouble with Islam Today: A Muslim's Call for Reform in Her Faith" by Irshad Manji. Location is TBA. If you need more information, please contact Leah Palombo at 612-669-4275 or leah.palombo@gmail.com. If you would like me to order a book for you let me know by Sept 3.
Intentional Community Meeting- 10:00 AM Saturday, September 13th (and then bi-weekly)- at the Brown home: 3331 36th Ave S., Mpls. Are you seriously interested in New Monasticism or Christian Community? Have you read about communties like Rutba House and the Simple Way? If you are interested in discussing the possibility of living with other Christians, but not sure what something like that would look like, join the Browns and the Krohns for an exploration over brunch, first meeting at the Browns'. If you are interested, please contact Bob Brown (612.695.0531 or bob@solomonsporch.com) so that we can get you a book (Schools For Conversion: The 12 Marks of a New Monasticism.) This book is from a small publisher and can be a little hard to track down.
Children's Room Cleaning, Organizing and Decor Enhancement- 3:00-4:30 PM Sunday, September 14- Subway dinner will be provided for all volunteers! Call or email Shelley if you can help (952.210.6223 or shelleypagitt@mac.com).
Lake Beauty Retreat- September 27-28: Join us for this fun annual event! The retreat cost will be $55 per person or $110 per family.
Prayer Requests
Ashley Denman has returned home after 8 months and has begun her freshman year of high school. We are all pleased. Thanks for your loving support and prayer as we continue to strengthen our family.
For Sarah McAtee's grandparents, Vivian and Roger Yeager...
From Sarah: My grandfather was diagnosed with cancer last year and the painful treatment has taken its toll on him and my grandmother both. Married for over 60 years, they've always been self-reliant, strong and selfless; and it has been hard on them to slowly lose the ability to care for themselves, especially with my grandfather slowing fading away. My grandfather is not expected to live to see October. My prayer: making their burden a little less of one, asking God to ease their suffering and to help myself and the rest of our family be strong. Thank you--
For James Parker's dad...
James' dad is searching for a new job and James would appreciate prayer for him.
For Abbey Almelien...
Abbey (a regular attender of Solomon's Porch with friend Bobby Longmire) recently relocated to Iowa and has been diagnosed with cancer. Please pray! She has a Care Page where people can leave encouraging messages and get updates on the progress of her treatment: carepages.com, then type in "abbey almelien" in search bar, and create a login to access her page.
For Nate Bettger...
Please pray for Nate Bettger, a member of our community currently living and working in Bend, OR. Nate's friend Keith was killed in a bike accident a few weeks ago. Nate has also asked for prayer for Keith's family. Pray that those who mourn will feel God's comfort and presence.
For the Khatiwada Family...
Ruby Annika Khatiwada was born July 28 and had surgery to close an opening in her back due to spina bifida two days later. Her parents are deeply grateful for your prayers for a safe delivery, and would love for you to continue to pray for her healing. Follow her story here: caringbridge.org/visit/khatiwada If you'd like to provide a meal for Ruby's parents, please contact Maureen Shealer at maureenshealer@hotmail.com. Parashar is also looking for a job. He is a trained mechanic. You can learn more on their website. (These are the folks we prayed over several weeks ago at our gathering).
For Ashley Krohn...
Ashley Krohn is in Tanzania for the months of July and August working in a HIV Clinic. She then is going in to a remote village to teach English for a month. She would love to hear from the community and any news from home. Ashley's email is ashleykrohn@gmail.com and she also has a travel blog (see below in blog list).
Send some love to Chico Pagitt:

Giving Financially to Solomon's Porch
There are a few ways to contribute financially to Solomon's Porch.
1. VANCO: http://solomonsporch.com/Documents/vancodepositform.pdf or contact Liz Byer (liz@solomonsporch). The form is also available for you to pickup right outside the church office. Currently, we have 25 people who are using this great service. We are charged a reasonable fee for using the company that processes the payments, so the more contributors, the better.
2. Google Checkout at http://solomonsporch.com/give. Google Checkout is not charging a processing fee, so 100% of your contribution will go to Solomon's Porch.
3. Consider setting up recurring or one time payments through auto bill pay with your personal banking institution.
4. And of course, dropping your check or cash in the mail or one of the boxes in the gathering space works, too!

Each teacher/helper works with the children for 30 minutes per month during the gathering.
